Does God Reveal What Our Fellowship In Heaven Will Be Like With Him And Other Believers?
Our fellowship is with God the Father, Jesus His Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Paul launches 1 Corinthians with this: "God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord” (1:9).
John tells us in 1 John 1:3, "Our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ."
Wrapping up 2 Corinthians, Paul states in 13:14, "The fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all."
This fellowship with the Trinity commences on earth but continues throughout eternity.
On earth we taste a tiny fraction of this fellowship. Can you imagine the depth of this fellowship throughout eternity with an infinitely loving and wise God who has prepared an eternal kingdom with Him as King and Friend?
Think about it. In the Father’s glorious and inviting presence, we feel His love and care. We belong. We know Him and are fully known and accepted. Our body of sin is removed and replaced with an immortal, glorified body. The communion and experience are deep, profound, unbreakable, eternal, and forever invigorating.
Though we are limited in our knowledge of our interaction throughout eternity, like the idea of the passing of time, we can know that somehow the Father and Son orchestrated the perfect heavenly existence before Creation.
The idea of entering His glory and celebrating the wonder exceeds the ecstasy of a trillion earthly celebrations with grand parades like the ending of World War II or the splendor of all Super Bowls combined.
We must trust the ideal and fulfilling blueprint for eternal life with God. No analogy comes close to what the eye will see and the ear will hear.
The struggle revolves around our inability to fathom, so we default to disbelief, and possibly to an image of it being untrue, or with backside horrors. When younger, my son Jonathan feared living forever. He could not envision day after day without end, so instead of comforting him the idea freaked him out. Something unpleasant lingered there, and he wanted no part of riding clouds and playing harps.
We must trust that what is inconceivable to us is because it is inconceivably good, satisfying, and enriching, not inconceivably frightening. Our eternal life entails a culmination of all that brings peace, joy, love, honor, and whatever good thing you can fantasize about and dream about on steroids.
Some of us who question and doubt must give God the benefit of the doubt! If ever that phrase applies, it fits here.
This raises the question of our fellowship with other believers. What will it be like? Will the introvert be introvertish, wishing for downtime in a faraway galaxy? Will creative and hardworking folks be tasked with a divine mission, and what does that entail in a place already perfect? And because there will be perfect harmony with all in agreement due to being of one mind, what will be the point of conversing since there are no differing views?
We can propose questions like these but must suspend our honest and holy curiosity until that Day.
Think of a very human scene. The family of a soldier thought to have recently died at war sadly gathers Christmas morning. However, to everyone’s utter amazement and awe, the soldier enters the room. Their father, husband, brother, and son survived the brutal war by escaping a prisoner-of-war camp! He was not dead but very much alive and in good health. All rush to embrace him as each sheds tears of joy. Never had they a Christmas morning or any other time with such an indescribably sweet fellowship.
And in that moment of pure joy and love, we catch a glimpse of something beyond the earthly realm—the essence of a fellowship that transcends time and space. It is a reflection of the ultimate bond we will experience in heaven, where our connections with others will surpass any happiness we’ve known in earthly and endearing relationships.
Our fellowship with others in heaven will be the most blessed and meaningful of relationships. There, all will feel loved, respected, joyful, and bonded in a way that words cannot fully describe. It will be a place where shared laughter, glorious testimonials, celebrated lives, and profound gratefulness abound.
In the heavenly fellowship, there will be no more loneliness or separation. We will be reunited with our Christ-believing loved ones, just as we are when a best friend returns after two years abroad or when a missing soldier shocks everyone with an unexpected return.
The heavenly reunion will be a time of endless celebration, where God designed us to find joy in the company of each other—a joy exceeding any experienced in our earthly existence. With certainty, our heavenly fellowship will be the apex of love, honor, and joy.
As for our fellowship with God and others, we see through a mirror dimly, so we must be content with glimpses and peeks.
